Economic Professors Bengt Kriström and Runar Brännlund situated at different universities on either side of the Umeå Campus contemplated the multiple possibilities a cooperation between their respective Departments would accomplish. Individually, the universities are leading within the field of environmental and resource economics. Together they strengthen the research field even further. They started working towards a sustainable collaboration within their field of interest: environmental and resource economics. Which in 2009 led to the creation of CERE, a research center in the field of environmental and resource economics and management with many interdisciplinary collaborations started.

The Centre, located at Umeå School of Business Economics, Umeå University (UmU) is a cooperation between Umeå University, and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU).

Our main objectives are to:
  • link research groups from different departments from the two universities (UmU, SLU)
  • provide seminars and workshops within the field of environmental and resource economics and management
  • constitute a platform for a creative and strong research environment within the field
  • develop higher education in environmental and resource economics

kvarnOur present strengths

During the last decades the Umeå Campus has developed into a national and international centre for research and education in environmental and natural resource economics. The two universities based in Umeå, UmU and SLU have a long tradition of cooperation in order to produce environmental knowledge from all faculties, including humanities and social sciences. This cooperation is the foundation for CERE's strengths and knowledge network.

CERE's main strengths:

Environmental and Resource Economics, Umeå Campus. CERE's research group within environmental and resource economics is one of the most prominent ones in Europe. Here you find over a dozen economists dedicated to addressing issues like resource scarcity, genuine wealth, nonmarket valuation, incentive design, and conflict resolution.

Ecology and Environmental Sciences, Umeå Campus. One of Europe's strongest research communities within ecology can be found on Campus. Six departments hold around 320 people. Amongst them some 25 professors, 100 doctors (post doctoral fellows, guest researchers, assistant and associate professors) and 115 PhD students. Ecosystem science has a strong hold here.

Social Sciences and Humanities, Umeå Campus. 15 professors, 40 doctors and more than 40 PhD students dedicated to environmental and resource research can be found here. In addition, there are a numerous amount of researchers with methods and interests related to environmental and resource issues.

Faculty of Forestry, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. Research focused on sustainable use of forest and all its resources for the benefit of human welfare can be found here. The research consists of long-term, large-scale experimental studies on applied management of forestry.
