Moriah will be working closely with CERE’s Tommy Lundgren: - We are currently working to apply network technology estimation methods in order to model the linkages between prevention and treatment technologies for emissions reductions. For example, switching to a lower emissions fuel source would be considered a form of prevention, while installing smoke stack scrubbers would be considered a form of treatment. We are also using similar network methods to better understand the tradeoffs in forest management between harvesting timber for final pulp and paper products, using forest resources to produce biofuel, and net carbon emissions. They have previously worked on studies to better understand the role of environmental investment decisions, emission reduction and, firm performance in Swedish pulp and paper industry. (Links to working papers below)
Moriah is an associate professor at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon. Her research focuses on the intersection of productivity and the environment. Main application areas include non-point pollution from agricultural production and greenhouse gas emissions from manufacturing. She is currently working on two projects focused on non-point pollution from agriculture, one situated in the US Mississippi River Basin, the other near the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. Both of which use bi-level optimization methods to spatially target environmental management practices to reduce nutrient runoff.
Moriah visits CERE as a Fulbright scholar, a competitive academic exchange program. However, Moriah has made a number of visits, holding seminars and collaborating with CERE researchers. She is very fond of CERE: - You have a remarkable program, both in terms of the sheer number people working in the area of environmental and resource economics and the quality of the research produced. I am always struck by the energy and enthusiasm for sharing research, both formally in seminars and informally over lunch or fika. My ongoing research collaboration here made coming to CERE a natural choice, but I also wanted to come here to able to take part in such a unique and active department.
