On September 6th, CERE had the annual CERE Kick-off to welcome everyone into the new academic year.
With a meeting at the Forestry Student Union Building, CERE had a roundtable presentation of ideas on the current CERE strategy and how to take CERE forward. A follow up of last year’s ideas showed that CERE’s been busy implementing the ideas. Next on the agenda was the plan for upcoming year.
The next aim of the CERE Kick-off was to focus on various calls for FORMAS funding applications based on brainstorming from groups. The need here is that FORMAS would like suggestions from the research community for future calls and applications. This covered a range of topics such as water quality/usage, biofuels and other energy related topics.
In the evening everyone gathered at the Umeå University Faculty Club to enjoy a delicious northern Swedish meal and socialize. In the evening all were treated to a rocking musical performance by the “The Wealth of Nations” (a.k.a. “The Star Boys”) comprising of Runar Brännlund on vocals and bass, Olle Westerlund, Magnus Lindmark and Bengt Kriström on guitar as well as Svante Karlsson (from Economic Geography) on drums. With rousing renditions of classic rock hits such as “Sympathy for the Devil”, blues hits such as “The Thrill is Gone” and a Swedish classic from Nationalteatern, reviews for the musical range and singing quality were high. We expect them to get a call from the Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street band for their next Swedish tour.
To welcome the new CERE members also initiated a fika, after the weekly CERE seminar. Such fikas have already been well received with some tasty cakes , desserts and wild discussion.
