PhD student Brian Danley, who recently joined CERE, provides a critical review of the dominant definitions of ecosystem servicesin his first article, written with Camilla Widmark.
Ecosystem services may be used as a catch phrase, but it has changed the vocabulary of policy and influenced the organization of science. This critical review of ecosystem services shows how the classification systems of ecosystem services are mostly consistent, but the foundational literature is not necessarily consistent in identifying individual ecosystem services. At the end of the day, ecosystem services present no new big ideas for contemporary environmental and resource economics.
The article “Evaluating Conceptual Definitions of Ecosystem Services and Their Implications” has recently been published in Ecological Economics.
