Visit by Sevil Acar

This week we had the pleasure of welcoming Sevil Acar back to CERE for a seminar! Sevil, a professor at Boğaziçi University in Türkiye, gave an inspiring talk titled “Evaluating the Economic and Environmental Impacts of Fossil Fuel Subsidy Removal: A Path Toward a Green Transition in Türkiye.”

The talk explored an analytical framework for assessing the macroeconomic and sectoral effects of phasing out coal subsidies, with a strong focus on climate implications and just transition challenges. Sevil discussed how redirecting coal subsidies toward renewables can mitigate economic losses while supporting Türkiye’s green transformation.

It was particularly enjoyable to welcome Sevil back—she visited CERE about ten years ago as a research guest, and it was great to reconnect and hear her latest work on energy policy and sustainability.
